Year 9 NEBSSA Hockey Success

On Tuesday 28th March, the Year 9 hockey squad travelled to Meadowbank Indoor Hockey Pitch in Magherafelt to compete in the U13 NEBSSA Hockey Final. Nine teams were entered into this competition and Ballyclare Secondary played three on their run to reach the final. The girls beat Glengormley High School 5-0 in their first match, they then beat Slemish College in Ballymena 4-0. After winning their first two games the girls knew that a draw with Cambridge House Grammar School would guarantee a place in the final, and that they produced a 0-0 draw to ensure that.

After a long wait, a strong squad of 13 players travelled to Magherafelt. The players were very excited to play on an indoor pitch. Despite this excitement they were not overwhelmed. Miss Oliver, however, was very nervous!

Ballyclare scored within the first 6 minutes with an excellent goal from Teah Horner, unfortunately this did not deter the opposition who came back with a deflection off the left post, leaving the score at half time 1-1. Magherafelt continued to take the game to Ballyclare, creating several chances in Ballyclare’s circle. One of these chances paid off and they scored their second goal, leaving the score a very tense 2-1 to Magherafelt. With thirty seconds to go, Ballyclare won another penalty corner and scored a fantastic goal, leaving the score two all at full time.

Extra time loomed and 10 minutes extra time was played. By now the tension was electric with the home supporters getting behind their team.  However, Ballyclare stuck to their game play and produced some of their best hockey this year. Teah Horner scored again within the first minute and it was now clear who was going to win with Ballyclare dominating the entire extra time, leaving the final score 4-2.

Squad: Aimee Hill, Louise Moore, Lucy Arthur, Ellie Thompson, Molly Smyth, Cora Bell, Keri McCullen, Georgia Coyle, Yazmin McLean, Janey Clements, Holly Jamieson, Jessica Kirkwood, Teah Horner (vice Captain) and Katie Conway (Captain). Coach: Miss Oliver
