The School Orchestra is open to all pupils in Years 8–14 who play an orchestral instrument. There is no audition, but it is recommended that pupils have been learning their instrument for at least one year to ensure they can fully participate and enjoy ensemble playing.
Rehearsals take place in the Music Department every Tuesday afternoon from 3.00–4.00pm.
We particularly encourage pupils studying, or considering studying, GCSE or A Level Music to join, as orchestra provides an excellent opportunity to develop ensemble skills, musical confidence, and performance experience.
Our repertoire is varied and exciting, including classical music, film scores, pop arrangements, and traditional pieces. Pupils have the opportunity to explore a wide range of musical styles while developing strong ensemble awareness and instrumental technique.

The School Orchestra enjoyed a busy and rewarding year of music‑making, performance, and achievement throughout the 2025–26 academic year. Members worked hard to develop their ensemble skills, preparing a diverse programme of music for a range of school events and public performances.
A significant moment in the autumn term was the orchestra’s performance at the Annual Remembrance Assembly, where pupils delivered a moving and poignant version of Hymn to the Fallen. The performance was made especially memorable by Mrs Nixon, who played the Last Post with great dignity and sensitivity.
The orchestra played a prominent role in the Christmas Concert, leading the school carols and performing We Wish You a Merry Christmas, Let It Snow, and Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas. These pieces helped create a warm and festive atmosphere and showcased the ensemble’s versatility and teamwork.
In March, the orchestra took part in the Ballyclare Music Festival, where they were proud to win the Orchestra Class. Their performances of Star Wars and Yesterday by The Beatles were highly praised and demonstrated both musicality and commitment. These pieces were later performed again for family and friends at the Spring Concert, alongside Lean on Me, bringing the year’s work to a celebratory conclusion.
The School Orchestra offers pupils the chance to develop musicianship, confidence, and teamwork while forming lasting friendships and enjoying memorable performance experiences. We would be delighted to welcome new members.
