Why study this subject?
We are delighted to offer this new course for 2025. The course explores the human impact on the environment, specifically the role of carbon emissions on climate change. In addition, the course investigates how individuals, communities and organisations can play a role in preserving the environment.
Summary of Assessment
This qualification is 100% centre assessed using portfolios of evidence, that will be collated over the two-year course. This qualification is graded as Pass or Fail.
Course Content
Unit 1: Understanding the role of carbon in climate change.
This is a mandatory unit and covers the areas of:
•Understanding climate change
•Understanding the causes and impact of global warming
•Knowing who is responsible for climate change and who it may impact.
•Understanding local, national and international responses to climate change.
Students will also study three out of four optional units, listed below.
Unit 2: Climate campaigning
In this unit students will learn about the role of MLAs and MPs and how they individuals and groups can lobby their representatives. We also explore how youth and environmental groups can bring about change in relation to climate change. We look further afield to consider global initiatives on climate change.
Unit 3: Tackling single-use plastic waste
In this unit, students will learn what single-use plastics are and how they are produced and disposed of. Students will also learn how to tackle the issues surrounding single-use plastics and how to run a campaign encouraging individuals to reuse, reduce and recycle single-use plastics.
Unit 4: Fast Fashion
In this unit, students will learn what is meant by fast fashion and the consequences of its use. They will gain understanding of the processes and material used in the fast fashion industry. They will gain experience of running a campaign to encourage people to reuse, reduce and reimagine clothing use.
Unit 5: Biodiversity Recovery
In this unit pupils will learn about the diversity of living organisms in a variety of ecosystems and how human activity can have a negative impact on biodiversity. We also explore how habitats can be protected and restored by understanding local, national and international responses to loss of biodiversity.
Progression Pathways
This course offers a variety of opportunities to develop skills which are useful for a wide range of careers. The course will specifically allow learners to progress to higher level qualifications in the area of environmental protection.
This course is not suitable for entry to A-level courses.
